It’s dirty, dusty usually smelly and often backbreaking work, but I love reupholstering old chairs. Having a job that requires me to rip fabric, unscrew legs, write on chairs, take off arms and generally create havoc, before I put it all back together again is fantastic. It’s fun!
As you’ll see, I particularly love mid century chairs, and looking ‘under the bonnet’ discovering how they are constructed. Whilst it can often be difficult and frustrating at times, it is so rewarding to take something sad and uninspiring and transform it into a thing of beauty; something that is fit to take centre stage in the smartest of homes.
I reupholstered my first chair in 2015, a Parker Knoll on a course in Manchester. Since then I’ve loved learning more and more about my chosen craft. I work both on my own, and alongside other upholsterers constantly exploring and developing what I love.
So far, I’ve reupholstered over 50 armchairs, stools and small sofas, each one completely different. I like the idea of creating an exclusive, one off piece of furniture, something unique that you won’t find anywhere else.
I chose the name Square Two furniture for my business because after stripping the furniture down, I’m taking it on a stage – bringing it up to date and making it fit for life now.
So not ‘back to square one’, but onto square two.
Where necessary, I strip the chair down to the bare frame and do any repairs, before building the furniture back up with new fillings and finally recovering. I’m an ardent believer in doing what I can to divert goods and resources from landfill, so I often use roll ends and discontinued fabrics.
I can also source chairs, for customers and help you find and create something truly special.
I live and work in Manchester and offer a pick up and delivery service within a 10 mile radius. For anything further afield, I use tried and trusted couriers.
Square Two Furniture is a reupholstery service and vintage furniture seller. Based in Manchester, I specialise in 20th century armchairs and small sofas, particularly mid century (1950-1970) pieces.
I source chairs from all over the UK and Europe; specifically Germany, Hungary and Poland.
I’ll work with you to give your old vintage chair or small sofa a new lease of life by having them professionally reupholstered and recovered.
Want something vintage, but can’t find exactly what you like? Pick a chair frame from the selection, and together we can customise it with the perfect fabric for you.
I have a selection of chairs that have been stripped back to the frame, repaired where needed, reupholstered and recovered and that are now ready for sale.
